Beijing Artist Chen Shih’s solo exhibition “(non) Media” will take place at Jia Art Gallery from November 4 – December 11, 2011. Chen explores and plays with the role of media in China, and presents his observations and the perception of “beauty” to the audience.
Media: the means of communication, as radio and television, newspapers, and magazines, that reach or influence people widely.
The media permeates into our daily lives in every way, influencing the way we experience the world and our lives. Information is constantly pushed upon us in different ways or forms, for instance, from the spectacular neon advertisements in Times Square to the information being shared on Facebook. As the global economy gets better, the traditional methods of advertisement and communication such as leaflets, DMs, newspapers, are gradually vanishing. Chen Shih pulls off the leaflets from lampposts and walls in China, taking specific words or messages from the leaflets, rearranges them on the canvas, this way, these advertisements are no longer a form of media, but a carrier of collective memories and a way to document our history.
Chen’s subsequent works titled “Marilyn Monroe” takes the image of the major sex symbol Marilyn Monroe and interwoven with close-up images of the eyes, nose, mouths of other beautiful women in the hair of Marilyn, this makes a very beautiful 4 piece collage, representing spring, summer, autumn, and winter beauties. Whether the world renowned sex icon is still well recognized by the new generation remains a question mark. Perhaps Chen is trying to imply that “she” is merely a representation or an epitome of the twentieth century.
Both series of works by Chen Shih takes the idea of media and representations to another level. What is the truth of what we see or hear every day is a question that Chen wants us to think about. The answer remains in ourselves.
More works by Chen Shih can also be viewed at Big Apple Bar and Restaurant.
