MEIYUAN ART MUSEUM
In 1957, when art collector Mr. Raymond Wang was just 15, his father collected the family’s first two works of art: HUNG Juei-Lin’s Still Life and YANG San Lang’s Seascape. These two paintings ignited Mr. Wang’s life-long love of art. Starting in 1971, he began his collecting career which would span more than forty years and hundreds of paintings. He visited museums and art galleries in Taiwan and abroad, whenever possible, developing a keen eye and a refined taste for art. Throughout his life, including the years working in the family’s textile and manufacturing businesses, Mr. Wang never forgot the passion triggered in him by his family’s first two paintings.
In hindsight, we see that Mr. Wang’s collection was ahead of it’s time. For example, he began collecting Sanyu and Pan Yu Liang in 1989, long before their artwork came to be widely appreciated by the public. Indeed, his two favorite artists, YU Cheng Yao and Richard Lin are now coming into public awareness, decades after Mr. Wang began collecting their works. Mr. Wang believes that time will reveal these artists’ works to be not only inspiration to many, but also important treasures in the history of art. Guided not by market trends or the pleasure of others, but instead by authentic emotional experiences in communion with nature, these two artists left their impressions on the canvas. Mr. Wang himself was also not guided by market trends but collected artwork guided by his intuition, seeking artists whose individuality resonated with his own, while often finding himself alone in the championing certain artists.
Led by Ms. Brenda Wang, the Mei Yuan Art Museum officially opens on October 29, 2016. The museum’s logo is the letter “Y” in the center of a circle representing three generations of art collectors. These three generations share a pure notion of sharing art for the love of art. Mei Yuan Art Museum’s mission is to spread this love of art while keeping a strong connection to the aspects of art that touch the human soul. The museum’s intimate “mini-museum” concept allows visitors the possibility of the same special communion with the art felt by Mr. Wang throughout his life.
The Mei Yuan Art Museum intends to cooperate with other museums and art foundations to create great exhibitions while specializing in the works of YU Cheng Yao and Richard Lin. The museum intends to build up a Catalogue Raisonné for these artists combining research, publications and other information. We welcome professionals and researchers to join our team to build this platform and database. Eventually we will have a team to authenticate their artwork as well.
